Is it free to join Youth Science Connection?

Yes! Youth Science Connection aims to make our organization as inclusive as we can, so there is not cost at all. We work with the students to find projects that they can do using online tools. If the student decides to spend money to support their project in some way that is their choice but they will not be reimbursed by YSC.

Does joining Youth Science Connection require in-person meetings?

Youth Science Connection takes place entirely online. There is no physical lab space for students to conduct projects. We work with the students to find projects that they can do at home using online tools. Through our website high school students  submit a scientific proposal and scientific poster. Our college mentors help the high school students complete their Youth Science Connection through email, video calls, and shared Google documents.

What is the process for selecting college mentors?

Undergraduate students interested in becoming a college mentor must first complete the YSC Mentor Application. Each prospective YSC mentor is interviewed to find out more about their research background and previous experience mentoring/tutoring students. Based on their application and interview the applicant can be selected to become a Youth Science Connection mentor.

 

What is the process for training college mentors?

Before any mentor is matched to a high schooler, their biography (name, university, major, hobbies) is uploaded to our About Page. The mentor also receives our YSC Mentor Manual which gives them tools to guide the high school student through their science project. The manual includes information about how to be a good mentor, how to give constructive feedback, how to help the student come up with a project, how to edit their scientific proposal, and how to edit their science poster. The manual also includes links to online resources that can help them in this process.

 

Are there prerequisites for high schoolers to join Youth Science Connection?

There are no prerequisites for high schoolers to join Youth Science Connection. There is no need for the students to come up with any project ideas before being accepted to the program (although they can if they would like). The mentor will work with the student to come up with a science project and execute it.
